How to Stick to Your Weight Loss Goals in the New Year
By Chris Ware, RDN, LDN
As the new year begins, many of us set nutrition goals with the best intentions. But by the time February rolls around, it’s easy to lose focus. Why does this happen, and how can you stay on track?
Why We Don’t Stick to Our Goals
- Unrealistic Expectations: Goals that are too ambitious or vague set you up for failure. “I want to be at my high school weight.” When you were younger, more active, had more time, and less responsibilities?
- No Clear Plan: Without a step-by-step strategy, it’s hard to stay consistent. “I’m going to join a gym.” And then what?
- Relying on Motivation: Motivation fades, and without habits, we revert to old routines. “I saw this thing on Instagram about 4am workouts everyday of the week.” Until work, family, and life’s responsibilities don’t align with this schedule after a week or two.
- All-or-Nothing Thinking: Small setbacks lead many to give up completely instead of moving forward. “I have 6 months to lose 50lb.” What if you only lost 10lbs and you kept it off?
How to Stay on Track
- Set SMART Goals: Make them Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Example: “Add a serving of vegetables to lunch five days a week.”
- Break Down Your Goals: Focus on small, manageable steps instead of overwhelming changes.
- Focus on Habits Less on Your Dream Weight: Create lasting habits, like prepping meals in advance or eating more protein, rather than focusing solely on outcomes.
- Plan for Obstacles: Prepare for busy days or cravings with simple strategies, like keeping healthy foods in the house.
Check-Ins for Progress
- Weekly: Review what went well and where you can improve.
- Monthly: Assess bigger-picture results and make adjustments as needed.
