What’s the Best Way to Treat an Injury? It’s Not Just RICE Anymore.

What’s the Best Way to Treat an Injury? It’s Not Just RICE Anymore.

Learn how modern recovery protocols help you bounce back stronger.

You’ve probably heard of RICE—Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation.

It was the go-to method for acute injury management for decades. Twisted ankle? Ice it and rest. Pulled a muscle? Same idea.

But as our understanding of tissue healing has evolved, so has our approach.

Enter POLICE: Protection, Optimal Loading, Ice, Compression, Elevation.

Let’s break that down:

  • Protection – Avoid further damage in the early phase, but don’t confuse this with total immobilization.
  • Optimal Loading – Controlled movement and weight-bearing as tolerated. The right load at the right time actually speeds up healing.
  • Ice, Compression, Elevation – These still play a role in reducing pain and swelling, but they’re no longer the whole story.

Why the shift?

Complete rest can lead to muscle atrophy, joint stiffness, and delayed recovery. Research now supports early, guided movement to help tissues heal better and faster. That’s where “Optimal Loading” comes in—it’s individualized and progressive, often guided by a rehab professional.

Backed by science: The British Journal of Sports Medicine introduced the POLICE protocol in 2012, emphasizing that “rest should be replaced with optimal loading to promote early recovery” (read the full article here).
