5 Ways to Make Sure Your Kids Are Health Ready for School

By Carolina Juterbock, CRNP

  1. Physicals: Make sure your child’s school and sports physicals are up to date. At IM Health, we ensure immunizations and age-appropriate screenings are current.
  2. Sleep Routines: Return to regular sleep cycles. Gradually adjust bedtimes and wake times to match a school schedule in the two weeks leading up to the first day of school. The AAP recommends 9-12 hours of sleep for children aged 6-12, and 8-10 hours for those aged 13-18. Avoid screen time for at least one hour before bed.
  3. Screen Time: Re-establish boundaries for social media and overall screen time. Less social media is generally better. The AAP recommends no more than two hours of screen time per day. Keep phones, tablets, and screens out of your child’s bedroom at night. Talk to your child about social media safety and encourage them to report any uncomfortable content to an adult.
  4. Exercise: Prioritize regular exercise for your child. Even a simple family walk offers physical and mental health benefits.
  5. Hygiene: Back-to-school means back to cold and flu season! Practice good hand hygiene, stay hydrated, get enough sleep to support a healthy immune system, and stay home when sick. Schedule a visit with your child’s pediatrician or our Urgent Care for any health concerns.
